Manchester Police Department Encourages Safe Bike Riding

The Manchester-by-the-Sea Police Department would like to remind residents of the following safety tips when riding a pedal bike or e-bike.

  • Helmets are legally required for bike and e-bike riders under 17 and strongly encouraged for riders over 17.
  • Bikes/e-bikes are not allowed on sidewalks.

About E-bikes

E-bike Class I: A low-speed electric bicycle equipped with a motor that provides assistance only when the rider is pedaling, and ceases to provide assistance when the bicycle reaches 20 miles per hour. No registration required, helmet required under 17.

E-bike Class II: A low-speed electric bicycle equipped with a throttle-actuated motor that can propel the bicycle without pedaling, but ceases to provide assistance at 20 miles per hour. No registration required, helmet required under 17.

E-bike Class III: Any e-bike exceeding the power or speed thresholds of Class 1 or 2 may instead be considered a “motorized bicycle” under G.L. c. 90, § 1. License, registration, and helmet required for all riders.
