Criminal Investigations Division

The Manchester-by-the-Sea Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division (CID) is responsible for the follow-up investigation of all crimes that fall beyond the scope of patrol personnel. These investigations include, but are not limited to, fraud, burglaries, thefts, assaults, robberies, sexual assaults, narcotics offenses, arson, unattended or unexplained deaths, and homicides.

The Criminal Investigations Division is commanded by the Lieutenant and staffed by two full-time Detectives. The Lieutenant also serves as the Department Prosecutor and is responsible for all law enforcement aspects of criminal prosecutions, from arraignment through the district court system.

Each Detective receives comprehensive general investigative training, as well as specialized training in areas such as crime scene processing, photography, and interviewing techniques. Detectives work closely with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies to conduct thorough and effective investigations.

Additionally, the Criminal Investigations Division is responsible for registering and monitoring all Level 2 and Level 3 Sex Offenders who reside, work, or attend school within the town. The Division also maintains responsibility for the securing, processing, and safeguarding of all property and evidence submitted to the Police Department.
