MANCHESTER BY-THE-SEA — On May 10 at about 5:30 p.m., an off-duty firefighter observed a motor vehicle strike the Singing Beach bathhouse and leave the scene. Manchester Fire Lieutenant James Doucette was near Singing Beach when he observed a white Volvo sedan collide with the historic building and drive away. He was able to see a partial license plate and contacted the Manchester Police Department. Responding officers were unable to locate the fleeing vehicle.
The next morning Officer Ryan Machain and Detective Chris Locke continued the investigation and were able to identify the vehicle’s owner as Eileen Hughes of Trumansburg, New York. After being contacted about the incident the owner responded to the Manchester Police Department where she admitted to striking the building.
Repair costs are estimated to be more than $10,000. Eileen Hughes has been cited for Leaving the Scene Property Damage (MGL c.90 s.24) and will be summoned to Salem District Court at a later date.
