MANCHESTER-BY-THE-SEA — The following is a statement from Police Chief Todd Fitzgerald on the death of George Floyd last week:
“The death of George Floyd is a disgraceful tragedy, and like so many, I was appalled by the actions and in-actions taken by the officers of the Minneapolis Police Department,” Chief Fitzgerald said. “We offer our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends, and join in the sadness and mourning that is being felt nationwide.
“The Manchester by-the Sea Police Department is committed to protecting and serving everyone in our community and upholding the sanctity of human life. We seek to accomplish this mission through accountability, transparency, strategic partnerships, community engagement, regular and comprehensive training, and the selection and professional development of high-quality personnel. Above all, the Manchester by-the-Sea Police Department seeks to provide services with compassion, dignity and integrity.
“We recognize there is work to be done, and will continue to frequently train our department on the most up-to-date policing procedures and standards. We will continue to hold officers accountable to the highest of standards, as there is no place in this profession for the tactics used in Minneapolis.
“In closing, we want our community to know that we will always stand in solidarity with you.”
The Manchester-by-the-Sea Police Department frequently trains its members on the safest and most modern and appropriate tactics. These training sessions include crucial topics such as de-escalation techniques, mental health, diversity and inclusion, fair and impartial policing, procedural justice and police legitimacy.
The Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association, representing Police Chiefs in all 351 cities and towns and most college campuses has denounced the egregious actions taken by four members of the Minneapolis Police Department, whether by action or inaction, that resulted in the death of George Floyd on May 25. Massachusetts Police Officers including the Manchester-by-the-Sea Police Department have thoroughly embraced the six pillars of the principles embodied in the final report of the President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing, and remain committed to professional conduct, democratic policing and procedural justice for all people.
